Everyone Loves Wild Salmon, Don't They?
Public reaction
What people have said as they've signed our petition against the new federal Pacific Aquaculture Regulations:
-
We should be strengthening the regulations for the safe-guards we have in British Columbia to prevent heavy industrialization and privatization of the coast, not lessening them. Please do not put the FPAR into effect. Strike these "new" regulations down ... protect the wild salmon, protect our environment and protect our coast. Our future is in your hands.
-
If this happens I will no longer support the current government.
-
Canada has a international reputation for a country yhat values humans and nature. All my friends in Germany have this view. I will try to engage them and have them write letters as well. Please keep going Alexandra and friends. you have restored my faith in individual power and participation. Cheers, actually, 3 cheers to you all!
-
I will actively campaign against any party that backs farmed salmon over wild salmon.
-
Salmon are vital for the survival and health of the oceans. If we don't keep them around, there will soon be none. Why can't anyone see this? Moderation in all things is the only way we can achieve this.
-
Remember all this next election.
-
Why they can't move to landpens like in Washington State?
-
TAKE FISH FARMS OUT OF OUR OCEANS!
-
As a kayak guide, I have experienced first-hand how tourists from around the world flock to BC to experience ecosystems that support amazing wildlife: bears, orcas, eagles - the list goes on; Salmon of all species are the backbone of these coastal ecosystems, and we must do EVERYTHING possible to address threats to these vital fish - without salmon this coast would be unrecognizable.
-
That we have to even sign a petition to stop this nonsense is insane.
-
PAY ATTENTION TO THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS MR. HARPER!!!!!
-
'The world was not left to us by our parents, it was lent to us by our children' african proverb
-
End salmon farming.
-
Dear Prime Minister of Canada: You do not only have the responsibility to protect and save salmon for Canada's sake - You have the responsibility to protect and save wild salmon for the ecosystem called Earth!
-
Ban fish farms in BC.
-
Listen to the people of Canada.
-
I won't vote for a government that lets this pass.
-
If you destroy the wild fish you destroy CANADA - think about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
This matter has to be taken seriously!
-
Keep the heat up, these people only respond when they have no other option otherwise they could not care less about us and we elected them.
-
FN will not allow this to happen in our territories and have no food to provide for us to eat. We will have to go to court again. Gilakasla, Hereditary Chief Robert Mountain.
-
Stop the insandity.
-
Move to closed containment and raise fish that eat plants, not other fish. Consider the common good, not just business.
-
Wake up!
-
I do not understand the utter disregard for our wild salmon. Generations to come will look back on this time as an era when our government had its head in the sand and Mr. Stephen Harper was the leader of this government. Please listen to the people of this country!
-
I am appalled at the lack of safeguards in place to ensure that wild salmon populations thrive for generations to come. it is wild salmon that need protection industry. Why are "elected" officials portecting industry at the expense of wild salmon, commonly owned by ALL Canadians.
-
When will accept that these fish farms are fill the ocean areas with polution the same as other Industries did in the past before they were regulated. DFO has been useless in their ability to manage the East coast fisheries and now will continue to be the same on the west coast. GET THE FISH FARMS OUT OF THE OCEAN AND STOP THIS DAMAGE NOW !!!!!!!!!!!
-
Listen to the First Nations People
-
can't believe we still have to fight to save our wild salmon
-
I have no respect for any government who will not protect our Wild Salmon Fishery. After reading the proposed Federal Pacific Aquaculture Regulations that it becomes very evident that this Federal Government is in favour of the Farm Salmon Industry. I am very angered by your lack of respect or concern for Wild Salmon.
-
No more destruction of wild salmon habitat PLEASE
-
Sir, I would respectfully ask you to carefully reconsider the proposed Federal Pacific Aquaculture Regulations, for the sake and well-being of all future generations of Canadians.
-
Take our resources seriously and conserve for the future!
-
I voted for you, maybe not again. Get your act together and do something right for a change. The political pressure you are getting and responding to may bring about the end of your tender as our leader.
-
This worthy effort is officially endorsed by the NW Steelhead and Salmon Conservation Society
-
I can't believe a government would put forward such regressive legislation endangering such a precious resource.
-
The USA depends on your good judgement. Please continue to set a good example to our government.
-
My hat's off to you Alex.
-
At a time when the environment is under continuous by private and government orgs, this proposal must be withdrawn immmediately
-
Let's get the big, long-term picture included in these new regulations!!!
-
50years from now i want my grandchildren to be able to eat salmon and watch them come up the sooke river to spawn. we need legislation to product wild salmon.
-
Please listen to us!
-
This is an important issue that needs to be addressed by our elected leaders!
-
Be accountable to those that live in and by the Pacific Ocean and the rivers that feed it; listen to the people on this coast.
-
We will only lose our wild salmon once!
-
Our Government doesn't seem to care about the future of wild salmon and the health of our coastal waters. I want to see my government take action to protect the future, not destroy it for profit today.
-
Wild salmon are important to BC and must be protected at all cost. Farmed salmon must be kept out of the Pacific/BC coast and out of BC rivers. Tighten up the regulations.
-
I intend to contact someone at UBC or SFU in Canadian law and find out if a Canadian government official knowingly writes or introduces or votes for legislation that is knowingly destructive to an area of Canada - can those persons be prosecuted under Canadian or International Law. If they are wrong with this legislation it could amount to a crime against the people of the west coast of Canada as this legislation seems to target this are as specifically and directly as one would do in an assault.
-
It is time that we accept the overwhelming evidence that salmon aquaculture does irreparable harm to our coastal waters.
-
Why is the Government of Canada determined to destroy our wild pacific Canada?
-
Please stop polluting and contaminating (directly or thru lack of regulations) our earth's rivers, fish, and oceans. Isn't there one nation out there that is willing to take the steps necessary to protect our planet and the general public?
-
Put the farms on land, even if the taxpayer has to subsidize this move.
-
Please remove salmon farms from the ocean and only allow them in closed containment on land. It is completely ludicrous, in the face of all the scientific and anecdotal evidence to continue to allow an illegal activity to flourish at the expense of an entire species of wild fish. The Wild Pacific salmon are a lynch pin in a delicate ecosystem. Do yo really want to have the devastation and destruction of this species as your government's legacy? Take the correct action. Make the legislation necessary to protect the fish, the jobs and the lives of countless other aquatic and land animals, not to mention humans. What is so difficult? That's what we in B.C. can't understand. It is the only right and correct action to take. Why aren't you?
-
These regulations are atrocious, and are moving aquaculture and salmon conservation in the wrong direction
-
As I once told my former boss (Minister of Ag.), "get your damn fish farms out of my ocean!" We often cruise the spectacular coastline on the western shores of the best country in the world and it almost brings tears to our eyes when we see an in-ocean aquaculture operation in so many of our pristine coves and bays. I would support the aquaculture industry and reliant coastal communities IF they got out of the ocean and carried out operations in CONTAINED LAND-BASED OPERATIONS!! Please don't play politics with my coastal environment. Listen to your scientists. Listen to the people. I would like to continue to supports my local MP, John Cummins, but not at the expense of and endorsement of the destruction of MY ocean.
-
I expect my government to make decisions for the good of Canada and Canadians, while also protecting our precious natural resources. Equitable treatment of all of the areas of Canada facing similar situations (eg west coast and east coast) is necessary, as is protection from foreign interests that would exploit Canada with little compunction or recourse.
-
Bring Tourism into the equation, $ talks!!!!
-
Unacceptable regulations proposal.
-
It is time to act in the best interests of humanity, instead of the best interests of the economy.
-
Move to closed pens, on land. Moratorium on salmon fisihing until numbers come back to normal.
-
You are going to let the salmon disappear as you let the East coast cod disappear. Wake UP!
-
Please stop the Atlantic farmed Salmon in our B.C. waters, before it's too late. Remember what happened when the pinebeetle was ignored.
-
I want stronger regulations to protect WILD SALMON
-
This appalling state of affairs is what i have come to expect from a Harper led government. They don't respect the environment, they don't respect the people that elect them and they don't respect the Salmon. The DFO is dysfunctional at best and the minster for the DFO is asleep at the wheel at taxpayers expense.
-
Never thought Canada would allow this to happen. Disgraceful!
-
I am 200% AGAINST THIS!
-
I urge those decision makers to think and act with a positive longterm mentality and to consider seriously how a seemingly small matter or decision can have enormous repercussions, do right, please.
-
Time for the federal government to step up and protect the wild salmon resource for future generations.
-
Do NOT allow feedlots to "HARM, ALTER,DISRUPT AND DESTROY" the fish habitat. Fine companies that cause environmental damage. Encourage land-based aquaculture.
-
Canadian citizens are the shareholders of the wild fish species on our coast - it is your mandate to protect them, not put them at risk for the sake of international shareholders of fish farm stocks.
-
This has gone too far!
-
More protection not less.
-
I am horrified that this government continues to support aquaculture in its present form on the Pacific coast. This is yet another solid reason for me to never vote for a Conservative candidate.
-
Listen to the people who care about the future of salmon. You have the power to modify your proposed changes. Do it.
-
Please consider what has happened to the wild salmon populations in Norway, Scoland, Ireland, and Chilie. Those who ignorant of history are bound to repeat it.
-
We are shocked and saddened at this line of thinking.
-
Send the fish farms back to Norway!
-
Look to Sepp Holzer's Austrian on-land productive fish farms that use predator and vegetarian fish and grow crops in the sun traps and fertile shores. Integrated systems mimicking nature are the answer for a sustainable aquaculture and agriculture. Add mushrooms in there and you have a hugely profitable and low input farm.
-
We are loosing our wild salmon and with this legislation the chances of that NOT happening are nonexistant. Listen to the people not the fish farmers.
-
This sounds like the opposite of the needed direction.
-
What will it take for you people to see?
-
Why not be a first and actually listen to the people who elected you. Set a wonderful precedent.
-
Do not let DFO destroy the fisheries on this coast the way they did on the East coast. Please!!
-
Even from a purely financial perspective, this is a no-brainer.
-
Fish farms almost destroyed my community in the 1980s - Sunshine Coast.
-
Please listen to the Science!
-
Get tough on crime against the ocean!
-
Disgusting of you & your Government to dare try to put this through!!!
-
I have spent about $35000 in the last six years in B.C. fishing for steelhead. I won't be back if these rules go into effect.
-
I have voted Conservative all my voting life, but will discontinue to do so if the present government does not pay attention to the West Coast fishery and make salmon farms be on land.
-
As a tax payer and concerned Canadian, I expect our government to listen to and act on my concerns to end fish farming in our waters.
-
Just look at Alaska, a thriving commercial salmon fishery with unlimited FN catches and jobs for everyone, BUT NO SALMON FARMING ALLOWED. They've got it right.
-
As my elected MP I want you to do everything you can to see that the proposed Federal Pacific Aquaculture Regulations are scrapped and the Constitution of Canada followed.
