Everyone Loves Wild Salmon, Don't They?

Migration Songs

April 30, 2010 by Megan Adams

From Andrew Mathisen
Good for simple sing-a-long!

My Sockeye swims free in the Ocean
My Sockeye swims free in the Sea
But when it swims by a big fish farm
It comes down with a bad disease

Bring Back..Bring Back..Bring Back Wild Salmon to me
(To Me)
Bring Back..Bring Back..Bring Back Wild Salmon to BC

The Sockeye they face many dangers
from human from fowl and from fin
But the Sockeye can's fight off the Sea Lice
they catch from their cousins in pens

(chorus)

So help us assist this great treasure
to swim in a fresh & clean sea
It will give the Sockeye great pleasure
to have fish farms out of the sea

(chorus)

  • Shulba The Salmon by vasyL ko
  • ...and I am swimming on to the ocean
  • downstream from the place where my baba died
  • the saltwater will preserve my scales
  • and photo plankton for nourishment
  • and we are on a mission to the ocean
  • like a big traveling family
  • swim on in the sacred water
  • collecting common energy
  • and we are gonna bring it back up the mountain
  • we are going to defy gravity
  • swim on against the strong current
  • back up the river where my moma was born
  • and maybe i will have dozens of babies
  • or be eaten by a grizzly
  • all i want to do is help my friends out
  • ALIVE in our watershed
  • We are on a Mission to the Ocean
  • Like a big traveling family.
  • Peace,

It's a Lice Filled Frankenstein Fish

Title: It's a Lice Filled Frankenstein Fish

(chorus)

It's Lice filled Frankenstein Fish
A fillet not fit for a dish
Let's work hard to make them all gone
before the Sockeye begin their next spawn

1

Well they got them big pens in the coves
where they fatten their fish in big droves
They feed them with pellets and they grow great big lice
the Wild Fish don't think these fish Ghettos are nice!

(chorus)

2

Well they're not the same species you see
and they fill up the chuck with their poop and their pee
They're genetically weak and they foul up the shore
with feces, diseases and their hormones and more

(chorus)

3

So from Ottawa down through Bee Cee
please help the wild salmon swim free
Take all the prisons and pens in the sound
put them ashore in tanks on high ground

(final chorus)

AND...here's reminder of what the song sounds like (in case you forgot?) The original lyrics can be found in this e-mail as well.

BABINE SONG
http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/5721458-babine-song-for-the-sockeye
1

at sockeye creek
the first salmon dart
to escape the dog who
disturbs them in the
shallows

black
hooked snouts
& river
torn
fins
find ecstacy
mad
red riot
in rocky pools

Indians get to net
them early
flat-bottomed boats
lay long
offshore

old women gut them
swift knowing kinives
brown river banks busy

chop....chop...the head
one long ripped belly equals
guts drifting
down
river

Dick Alex's kids heap
pink roe into blue
ice cream buckets

Gulls scream and
turn a sexless sun
excited

the rich sweet smell
of blood

2

Clarny don't talk much &
makes a good fishing partner
I look at his face caught
in evening sun
as we troll Char Bay

his weathered face
tells no age

I hook a big one
& we both lean over
the side look down
at the 5lb char shining
dull gold beneath us

turning circles
twenty feet below
it flashes
in the dying
light

I play the life
out of him
with line

tension
struggles
tugs at
hands

raindows rise
around us as we
head toward the
landing

the village
broken little teeth
on jaws
of blue
& green

the north
can swallow
you

the buildings
melting into earth
the bones
of last year's sockeye
grinning white in silt
beside the river
silent

3

aspen
shiver
whisper a season's return
as campertrucks
& winnabagoes hump
homeward
to another border

dark
beneath the bow
sockeye blink and
rumble dumb into
oblivion
& rot

I return
like an apostle
to the shore
& gut my fish

I hear
a tune
to an old
song

it has
no words

FISH FARM PRIVATEERS
1

Oh the year it be Two Thousand Ten
( I wish I was in Nitinat now)
When I left the gravel in my clean creek
to seek the ocean so wide and deep....

(chorus)

Goddamn them Farms..I was told
the ocean was clean and clear and cold
I'd get no lice....and face no harm
Now I'm a sickly fry and losing my charm
I swam too close too big fish farm

2

Well..I made it past droughts and trouts and gulls
( Oh I wish I was in Nimpkish now)
When the river spread out to a waiting sea
Broughton Sound awaited me.....

(chorus)

3

The floating prison was a sickening sight
(Oh I wish I was in Skeena now!)
Fulla of frightened fry fulla pellets and drugs
and curious folks wearing boots and gloves...

(chorus)

4

I got caught in a bloody great net
(O I wish I was up Stikine now!)
Where me and my chums undersent some tests
to find the reason for all these pests...

(chorus)

5

O Salmon are Sacred can't you see
(I wish I was in Sointula now!)
We must flow the way a river soon finds the sea
Clean & Happy & Wild & Freeee

(final chorus)

Goddamn them farms..just let us be
to swim in an ocean that's clean and free
To get no lice and face less harm
in order to stay healthy and retain our tasteful charm
please get rid of these big fish farms

Again I'm hoping for a rendition using these words. I'm not the most musically inclined person and find that I cannot switch words to the tune without actually hearing it with the switched words.
