Elena Edwards:
When we aren't stopping to gather petitions from those who greet us along the river, we will be taking to the streets to collect them and raise awareness. We welcome others to join us.
April 28th: the Fraser River Paddlers will be honored to have Chief Ron John of Chawithil present with them in Hope for their launching ceremony. They are looking forward to spending time with the Cheam Indian Band on the evening of April 28th and joining them for their First Salmon Ceremony the next morning.
April 29th: Salmon Ceremony with the Cheam Indian Band at around 9 am. They will arrive in Mission and stay for the night.
April 30th: leave Mission from the boat launch around 10am and paddle up the Stave River where a group will be waiting for with lunch and signed petitions near the Ruskin Dam. They will paddle towards Kwantlen (Fort Langley) from there and spend the night.
May 1: The paddlers will be joined by the Fort Langley Canoe Club for a few hours, beginning at 9:30am and will be in Katzi (Pitt Meadows) for the night.
May 2: The paddlers will stay a second night in Katzie (subject to change).
May 3: leave the Katzie for a short paddle to the Kwikwetlem. From the mouth of the Coquitlam river the group will take to the streets of Coquitlam with banners and petitions and stay the night in Kwikwetlim/Coquitlam
May 4th: leave Kwikwetlim for a short paddle across the river to Bridgeview, near the Pattullo Bridge where they will again take to the streets with banners and petitions.
May 6th: the Paddlers will spend the night in Steveston on the night of the 6th
May 7th: cross the straight of Georgia and meet up with the GET OUT MIGRATION in Sidney.
The petitions will be delivered to Alexandra Morton at her event in Sidney on May 7th. The paddlers will join Alexandra on her walk into Victoria on May 8th.
Given that the Fraser River is (or was) one on the major salmon bearing rivers, given that it is listed as 4'rth on the endangered rivers in B.C. list, and given that each of us who live along this incredible, life giving river surely value the sacred salmon that swim through it yearly and the incredible efforts they make to continue the cycle of life, then surely we will do what we can to raise awareness and support for their very existence.
