Everyone Loves Wild Salmon, Don't They?

Vote Salmon - on the campaign trail with Alexandra Morton

April 17, 2011 by Anissa

Alexandra Morton is on the campaign trail for wild salmon visiting candidates  across BC in the run up to Election Day on 2nd May.

Remember to Vote Salmon!

Join the Wild Salmon People in Victoria on May Day (1st May) - until salmon farms get out of BC's waters every day is a Mayday for Wild Salmon

You can vote in advance and join us in Victoria on 1st May leading into Election Day.  If not, please fly the flag for wild salmon in your community - more details on how to make a flag are online now!

"One of the remarkable things about wild salmon is that people all over BC work for them for free, because they love them," said Alexandra on her visit to the Vedder River clean up (16th April).  "Politicians really should take note," she wrote in her Vote Salmon blog.

"Not a single candidate has come out in support of salmon farms, though many said they will get back to us," said Alexandra on Day 2 in Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster.

At the official launch in Campbell River on Wednesday (14th April), Alexandra said:  "I am going door-to-door to ask candidates in the federal election about their position on taking a stand to protect wild salmon by removing the salmon feedlots from BC waters. I am posting their answers at votesalmon.ca".

Read what candidates are saying via 'Politicians Speak' and see photos of our visits to candidates offices.  Make your voice heard by commenting on Alex's blog and visit your local MP and candidates' offices.  Please report back to the Wild Salmon People.

"Kristi the Salmon is totally flabbergasted at the disrespect of most Conservative candidates in regards to how wild salmon are the cornerstone of the health of BC," said Anissa Reed.  "Wild salmon are the backbone of the BC coast - we need to support those candidates who have the backbone to stand up for wild salmon.  The Province of BC has spoken out already and 85% of people want wild salmon but Ottawa is clearly not listening to the Wild Salmon People".

"Adams River is A the nursery ground and B the graveyard of wild salmon," said Sonya Vernon-Wood president of the Adams River Salmon Society.  "The passage between the beginning and ending of life should be clear of pollution, diseases, open net cage salmon farms and ignorant politicians.  Government, whoever wins the election, need to clear a safe passage for the baby wild salmon as they out-migrate to sea".

Alexandra Morton is visiting the Adams River on 17th April - followed by a visit to the Shuswap River (18th), Abbotsford & Chilliwack (19th), New Westminster, Surrey, Steveston, Ladner & Delta (20th), North Shore & Squamish (21st) and Vancouver for Earth Day (22nd).  Please view the itinerary for more dates and the calendar
