Everyone Loves Wild Salmon, Don't They?

Cummins Exposes the Inquiry's Scientific Advisors

June 9, 2010 by Megan Adams

In a series of press releases over the past week, MP John Cummins has exposed the past of a series of scientific advisors appointed by Judge Cohen for the Inquiry into the crash of the 2009 Fraser Sockeye: www.johncummins.ca/

The Inquiry, as defined by it's terms of reference, must investigate the policies, practices and scientific advice of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Cummins points out the past of the Inquiry's advisors, who have all acted as former Fisheries and Oceans scientists, advisors and/or bureaucrats. How, Cummins asks, will these former employees and advisors be able to objectively examine DFO's inability to manage the Fraser sockeye stock, the very policies and practices they help keep in place?

As a resident of John Cummins riding, I am concerned with Mr. Cummins position as an advocate for Wild Salmon, while at the same time he is a member of the federal Conservative Party. Mr. Cummins is well respected in this community, having served over 15 years as the MP for this area. While he is continually touted as a man who speaks his mind. He is also a member of the same Conservative Gov't that has continually refused to listen to Alexandra Morton's findings on BC fish farms. Cummins objections to DFO and other former gov't scientists advising the Cohen inquiry as inappropriate because they are part of the original problem is no different than Conservative MP Cummins position. If he has a problem with the Conservative Gov'ts Cohen inquiry, then he should resign from the Conservative Party and sit as an independent member of parliament. Although one has to appreciate everyone's attempts to politically maneuver the salmon issue to their advantage. It is overly hypocritical of MP Cummins to attempt to "have his cake and eat it too".

call to the Commission

Hello I called and left a message with the machine at the Cohen Commission expressing my concern about the relationship that the four scientists mentioned and the DFO have had, and in the case of Riddell continue to have. The science is too broad and deep to be interpreted by anyone other than an unbiased mind and certainly their background would make that impossible.
